UPCOMING EVENTS

 

Alpha sigma mu 18th Annual MATE Banquet | April 20 | 7-10PM | ATL - NEW!

Alpha Sigma Mu is hosting the 18^th Annual Materials Engineering Banquet on Friday, April 20^th at the ATL (Bldg 7). The theme is  Fiesta! The event will begin at 7 PM and end at 10 PM. The banquet is the biggest social event of the year for the MATE department. There will be time to socialize with fellow materials engineers, delicious food (it will be Taqueria Santa Cruz this year!), and some excellent skits.

An ASMu representative will be stopping by your MATE class this week or next week to sell tickets. The tickets cost $10 for MATEs, and $20 for non-MATEs. If you or a group of MATEs have a skit or act that you may be interested in performing at the banquet, please let an ASMu representative know. For any questions, feel free to contact Alex Pauer (apauer@calpoly.edu).

 

1-2 Unit Research Opportunity, Algae Biofuel, Water Recycling, Algae Fermentation - APPLY BY March 21 - NEW!

The Cal Poly Water and Energy Sustainability Training Team (WESTT) is currently accepting applications for their Spring 2018 research program. This is an incredible opportunity to be a part of cutting edge research related to water and wastewater treatment, algae production, algae biofuels. Besides improving your resume and learning valuable analytical and laboratory techniques, 400 level units are available. Many of the skills learned through this experience are usually associated with graduate level research and will give you a head start in the field upon graduation. CESAME (Center for Engineering, Science, and Mathematics Education) Opportunities 

CESAME is offering multiple programs to engage and teach elementary and middle school students subjects related to STEM. Here are some of the programs:

• MOST (Mentors In Out Of School Time): Teach STEM-focused modules to students in an after school program at a local school. (Paid/Course Credit)
• LBDL (Learn by Doing Lab): Engage visiting 3rd-8th grade students in hands-on labs on campus. (Course Credit)
• TEAMS (Teacher Assistants in Mathematics and Science): Tutor or assist Math, Science, or AVID teachers in local middle school or high school classrooms. (Paid/Course Credit)

Innovation Quest 2018 – Apply by March 23

Have an idea that's been keeping you awake at night and been looking for some motivation to turn it into a reality? Join the growing community of Cal Poly students that used iQ as a springboard to turn a passion project into an entrepreneurial journey and took Learn By Doing to a whole new level.

People working on teams that need additional help will have an opportunity to present their project and recruit people. If you don't have an idea, but want to join a team, you'll have a chance to network with teams and tell them about how you can help them win this competition. Come stop by the information session and check out the flyer for more details!

 

ENGINEERS WITHOUT BORDERS (EWB)

Project Meetings | Mondays | 7PM - 9PM: Feel free to try out different project teams and be sure to introduce yourselves to the PMs if you’re new to EWB! Here are the team room locations: Fiji (Room 14-249), Malawi (Room 14-247), Local Projects (Room 26-123), Nicaragua (Room 192-224), Thailand (Room 186-C200)

Sustainability Task Force (STF) | Mondays | 6PM - 7PM | Bldg 26-104: STF is open to everyone and is a space to identify problems in EWB and collectively create solutions to improve our club. 

Tea Time | Mondays | 11AM - 12PM | Library by Fishbowls: Tea Time is a time to chat with the president and vice president about anything and everything. It’s basically open office hours and we’d love to see you! Look out for our EWB shirts/boxes of tea!

IMPACT | Tuesdays | 11AM - 12PM | Library 216Q (fishbowls): IMPACT organizes volunteering events that unite EWB members and fellow Cal Poly students with local nonprofits dedicated to the community EWB Cal Poly knows and loves.  

1st Officer Board Sit-in| Wednesday | 6PM - 7:30PM: Interested in taking a leadership role in EWB? If so, EWB invites you to sit in an officer board meeting so you can see how the club is run and if it is something you might be interested in doing! If you're interested, sign up here! The following days are available for sit in: Wed 2/28.

Fulbright Workshop | March 8 | 11:10AM - 12PM | Bldg 52-E46 

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program includes fully funded international opportunities for graduate study, research, creative arts practice, teaching assistantships in English, digital storytelling projects, public policy fellowships, and ethnomusicology research. Join us to learn about Fulbright awards for graduating seniors and graduate students. We will discuss the application and selection processes and provide advice on how to submit a competitive application. The workshop is open to all students and is best suited for juniors, seniors, and current grad students. The Materials Handling Education Foundation Scholarship - Apply by March 31 

The Material Handling Education Foundation, Inc. (www.mhefi.net) is an independent charitable organization established in 1976 with a mission to promote the study of material handling, logistics and supply chains by exposing students and educators to the industry through financial support. The Foundation will offer scholarship award opportunities to students who are committed to studying material handling, supply chain and logistics for the 2018/2019 academic term. Scholarship awards range from $1,500 to $6,000 and are made up of funds from the Foundation and the Howard Bernstein Industrial Distribution Scholarship Program.

UC MERCED MACES Graduate Recruitment

With the help of a $5 million award from NASA, UC Merced has established MACES (Merced nanomaterials Center for Energy and Sensing), a nexus for promoting functional nanomaterial-based research and education. MACES faculty members are looking for highly motivated students with strong academic performance to join us for Ph.D. graduate study. Students who participate in our program would benefit from multidisciplinary research training, guidance by two mentors, usually from multiple majors (sometimes even from NASA), and access to state-of-the-art facilities. Furthermore, students who are U.S. citizens will have an opportunity to participate in NASA internships by working at NASA Research Centers. NSERC CREATE Quanta Program

The NSERC CREATE program, called Quanta (Quantum Nanotechnology Training in Alberta), is held jointly between the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary. This program is specifically designed for incoming graduate students that have an interest in developing the next generation of quantum technologies. Students can work with truly state-of-the-art equipment, such as dry dilution refrigerators, ultra-cold atom machines, Canada's best nanofabrication facilities, and a metropolitan fiber network.
