Back to the Future Summer Undergraduate Research Program

The Back to the Future program is funded by the NSF and provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to work on research topics in Metallurgy and Materials Science. Many of these topics have historical and artistic facets as well. Explore this fascinating connection between metallurgy, art, and history in the Black Hills of South Dakota!

The program will run for 10 weeks, from May 30 to August 5, 2022. Students apply to a research project and receive a faculty mentor to help guide them through the process. They will also get to attend seminars and workshops on the historic and artistic impact of metallurgy. For their time and work, the Back to the Future program is offering students a $5000 stipend and is providing housing for the program.

The deadline to apply has been extended until March 14. If interested, please download the application form on this website and send it to Dr. Michael West (michael.west@sdsmt.edu). Contact Dr. West if you have any questions!
