Volunteer at the VEX Robotics Competition 

Cal Poly Society of Women Engineers is looking for volunteers for the annual VEX Robotics Competition on January 26-27, 2018. We will welcome 40+ robotics teams to compete in this year's game, "In the Zone."

SCHOLARSHIPS

 

CFMA Engineering Scholarship - Apply by Jan 31 

The Construction Financial Management Association (CFMA) is welcoming applications for a $2,500 per year, two year scholarship to be awarded to a Cal Poly engineering major.  The scholarship is for a junior who is a declared engineering major with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.  It will be awarded in the second half of the school year (likely sometime in Q1 of 2018.) 

Each applicant is asked to complete a two page essay discussing why he or she chose to major in engineering and plans for post-graduation.  Each applicant should also provide a copy of a current transcript. 

Complete applications must be received by January 31, 2018.

The Materials Handling Education Foundation Scholarship - Apply by March 31 

The Material Handling Education Foundation, Inc. (www.mhefi.net) is an independent charitable organization established in 1976 with a mission to promote the study of material handling, logistics and supply chains by exposing students and educators to the industry through financial support. The Foundation will offer scholarship award opportunities to students who are committed to studying material handling, supply chain and logistics for the 2018/2019 academic term. Scholarship awards range from $1,500 to $6,000 and are made up of funds from the Foundation and the Howard Bernstein Industrial Distribution Scholarship Program.

Vanderbilt Institute of Nanoscale Science and Engineering REU - Apply by FEB 15 - NEW!

The Vanderbilt Institute for Nanoscale Science and Engineering (VINSE) brings ten students each summer to campus to work closely with VINSE faculty on research projects in cutting edge areas of nanoscale science and engineering.  This summer program is funded by the National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (NSF-REU) program.  Participation in the program provides students with a true interdisciplinary research experience in an environment where physicists, chemists, biologists, and all engineers collaboratively solve problems and create new scientific understanding. Each student works directly with VINSE faculty members and their research groups and has access to the VINSE laboratories, which are shared facilities available to all authorized users. UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA-LINCOLN SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM 

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is now accepting application for its Summer Research Program. This 10-week residential summer research experience that provides mentoring and research participation while allowing scholars to preview graduate school life at a Research1 university. Participants all receive competitive stipends, room and board, travel/transport, graduate school preparation workshops, social and networking activities, and more. SRAM Job Opportunity for Strong Women Engineering Candidates 

SRAM LLC is one of the world's largest suppliers of components to the bike industry. Established in Chicago in 1987, SRAM continues to promote cycling through its products, its advocacy, and its employees who are dedicated to improving the cycling experience. Higher Education Research Experiences at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (HERE at ORNL) provides research opportunities and associated activities for undergraduate students. The program is designed to complement academic programs by utilizing the unique resources of ORNL to enhance science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, encourage careers in science and technology, and improve scientific literacy, while at the same time contributing to the Laboratory mission. Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates at Northwestern University – Deadline Feb 15 

The Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) at Northwestern University offers a 9-week, paid summer research experience for undergraduates. Students are matched with leading research professors in science and engineering fields. Research areas include ceramics, polymers, nanocomposites, photonics, nanoparticles, molecular electronics and biomaterials. The program dates for 2018 are June 18 to August 17. There is an opportunity for a summer intern in 2018 at Solar Turbines.  Although not explicitly titled and described as such, posting 4311BR Intern - TMP Mechanical Design Engineer has an allocation for a Materials Engineer summer intern.

US Department of Energy Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) - Deadline Jan 12

The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program encourages undergraduate students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at the Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories. Selected students participate as interns appointed at one of 17 participating DOE laboratories/facilities. They perform research, under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists or engineers, on projects supporting the DOE mission.

The SULI program is sponsored and managed by the DOE Office of Science’s, Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS) in collaboration with the DOE laboratories/facilities. For more information about this opportunity, visit the website!

JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY-NSF FUNDED RESEARCH EXPERIENCE FOR UNDERGRAD OPPORTUNITIES - APPLY BY FEB 1

Johns Hopkins University is offering a few opportunities for students to apply for paid summer research programs at the Institute for Nanobiotechnology for Summer 2018. Here are some of the programs they are offering:

REU in Nanotechnology for Biology and Engineering - Students majoring in the STEM fields participate in research projects in the exciting and rapidly growing area of nanobiotechnology, a place where biology, medicine, and nanotech meet. Rosetta Commons REU - Interns in this geographically-distributed REU program have the opportunity to participate in research using Rosetta Commons software. The Rosetta Commons software suite includes algorithms for computational modeling and analysis of protein structures. It has enabled notable scientific advances in computational biology, including de novo protein design, enzyme design, ligand docking, and structure prediction of biological macromolecules and macromolecular complexes. Students learn the inner details of the Rosetta C++ code and community coding environment. UC MERCED MACES Graduate Recruitment - NEW!

With the help of a $5 million award from NASA, UC Merced has established MACES (Merced nAnomaterials Center for Energy and Sensing), a nexus for promoting functional nanomaterial-based research and education. MACES faculty members are looking for highly motivated students with strong academic performance to join us for Ph.D. graduate study. Students who participate in our program would benefit from multidisciplinary research training, guidance by two mentors, usually from multiple majors (sometimes even from NASA), and access to state-of-the-art facilities. Furthermore, students who are U.S. citizens will have an opportunity to participate in NASA internships by working at NASA Research Centers. Johns Hopkins Materials Science and Engineering Master's Program and Information Session - Apply by Dec 15

The Johns Hopkins Department of Materials Science and Engineering is seeking qualified applicants for its master's program in materials science and engineering for fall 2018 enrollment. For full consideration, the preferred application deadline for fall 2018 admission is December 15, 2017.

USC Campus Previewing EVents - Apply by Feb 15

The Viterbi School of Engineering welcomes students from across the U.S. and Canada to explore graduate programs at the USC campus. These events provide students the opportunity to:

  • Tour the USC campus and the engineering facilities
  • Meet current students to learn about graduate student life
  • Interact with faculty and department staff for in-depth program details
  • Receive an application fee waiver to apply for graduate programs at the Viterbi School

Events include:

  • Master’s Preview Day  | Nov 10: Students with a background in engineering, math or science are welcome to attend to learn about Master’s degree programs offered by the Viterbi School. Travel grant stipends are available for highly qualified students. Learn more and register here
  • REACH Graduate Engineering Preview  April 12-13: Sophomores and juniors with a background in engineering, applied mathematics or physical science are invited to apply to REACH to learn more about graduate study (MS and PhD) at USC. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. or Canadian citizens.This program is particularly geared toward students from backgrounds that are historically underrepresented in the field of engineering: African-American, Latino and Native American. Travel expenses to and from Los Angeles, lodging, and meals are subsidized by the Viterbi School.

WESSEX INSTITUTE MASTER'S DEGREE PROGRAMME

Wessex Institute has signed an agreement with University Atlantica in Lisboa to launch a Master degree programme online. The programme will start with the following courses:

  • Master in Materials Engineering
  • Master in Aeronautic Maintenance Technology & Management
  • Master in Engineering & Management of Manufacturing Systems

The whole course, including final dissertation will take two years to complete. The courses are all online. Candidates will only require a minimum of one month in residence, two periods of two weeks each, either at Atlantica University or Wessex Institute.

 

Dept of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE NNSA) StewarDship Science Graduate Fellowship - Apply by Jan 10

As part of its science and national security missions, the U.S. Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE NNSA) supports a broad spectrum of basic and applied research in science and engineering at the agency's national laboratories, at universities and in industry. Because of its continuing needs, NNSA has a special interest in encouraging development of the next generation of leaders in stewardship science.

The DOE NNSA SSGF program's primary objective is to encourage the training of scientists by providing financial support to talented students who study and research designated areas of stewardship science accompanied by practical work experience at DOE NNSA research facilities.

Need some $$$ for groceries? Cal Poly Hunger Program can help you! 

Adequate nutrition is very important to your success in the classroom. After rent, tuition, and books, sometimes scholarships and loans just don’t cover all of your expenses.

If you could use some extra money for food, consider signing up for CalFresh, a nutrition assistance program that can help with some of your grocery expenses. The average CalFresh student recipient receives $154 monthly to be used on fresh foods at grocery stores or farmers’ markets.

Please stop by drop-in hours on Mondays from 10 AM-4 PM or Fridays from 2 PM- 4 PM to learn more and find out if you may be eligible. No appointment needed! Our office is located in the Health Center (Building 27), room 173B. We can help you through the entire application process and provide supporting resources.
