Ferrofluids on YouTube

MATE students compose and play original song about ferrofluids and become YouTube rock stars

Ferrofluid stars

MATE sophomores, Alex Stanley and Ryan Satcher, reveal their musical talent and creativity with their innovative song entitled, “Ferromagnetic Funk Fluid (a.k.a. Evil Porcupine)”. As part of a class project, the students researched the topic of ferrofluids, and then wrote, filmed, and starred in a short video to explain the science and applications of ferrofluids along with their teammates, Santiago Caceres and Wei Chandra. At the end of the educational and amusing video, the learning objectives are reviewed through song. Alex and Ryan play all the musical instruments, and nicely show how to meld the “two cultures” of science and art.

Upon enthusiastic response by their classmates, they posted their video on YouTube, and have been generating positive response ever since. Students can even be caught humming the tune.
