MATE Freshmen work on Service Learning projects in the Spring with the SLO Community
Under the direction of Profs. Harding and Hughes, the MATE freshmen worked on six different service learning projects with the local community. Service Learning refers to a teaching and learning strategy that integrates community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. Each team was also supervised by a MATE junior or senior that acted as the project manager.
This year, the clients included Oak Park Recreation Center, Maxine Lewis Memorial Shelter, SciTechatorium in Avila Beach, San Luis Obispo Botanical Gardens, and Growing Grounds Farm. The projects range from an environmentally friendly insect control system and a web-based weather observation camera, to electronic signage, a greenhouse, and storage facilities. (Click here for more information.) Presentations were made to the public on June 11, 2008.
