Ways alumni can help the Cal Poly MATE department

10. Spread the word and excitement about Materials Engineering to children with the MATE outreach kit filled with presentation slides, demonstrations, and fun stickers and temporary tattoos.
Visit local schools, your old high school, or your children's school. The MATE outreach kit can be borrowed and contains all sorts of items to make science cool. Contact Lisa Christensen (lisa.Christensen@gmail.com) or Kathy Chen (kcchen@calpoly.edu) for more information.

9. Sponsor a scholarship for current MATE students through your company or your own funds.
The Jim Regan scholarship was established by James Regan, Mate '68 and is earmarked for a Mate student working to support him/herself in school.

8. Seek out and hire a MATE for a summer internship.
Andrew O'Connor at Chevron hired Mike Leonard as a summer intern to continue the strong MATE connection. Kevin Nibur recruited MATEs for the Washington State University summer research program.

7. Donate old or unused equipment to the MATE department.
Digital Rockwell hardness tester donated by Andrew O'Connor at Chevron is now heavily used in the MATE 215 introductory materials laboratory.

6. Donate supplies or services to support new design-based projects in MATE courses.
Scott Miner (class of '95) gave a guest lecture about machining to the freshmen and provided stock materials to build vacuum systems. CTC United Defense performed all the machining as per order of each design team. NDC routinely donates NiTi samples for MATE labs and projects.

5. Sponsor an industrial-relevant senior project.

4. Come back to Cal Poly to give a MESS (Materials Engineering Student Societies club) talk or host a company tour for MESS.

  • MESS president (2006-07): Tim Melin (tmelin@calpoly.edu)
  • MESS faculty advisor: Richard Savage (rsavage@calpoly.edu)
  • Recent alum MESS speakers: Ryan Grandfield and Aaron Baldwin (Guidant); Jen Fino, Maria Santa Ana and Alison Souza (Nitinol Devices & Components); Bill Wood (Agilent); Dustin Hulbert (UC, Davis); David Taggart (HyperCar)

3. Give feedback to the MATE department about what skills and/or topics would be helpful for current MATE students out in industry or graduate school.
Suggestions that have been emailed to faculty (such as using CAD, giving presentations, understanding heat transfer) are collected in a binder and are addressed as part of our ABET accreditation process.

2. Give us an update and stop by the department office when you're on campus.

1. Write us a letter or send us an email telling us how your education here at Cal Poly has helped you succeed in your career.
This information will be used at our next ABET accreditation visit.
