Gary Boerman - MATE 1964
Gary is retired from FMC Corporation as Corp Dir of Materials Engineering.

Tom Becker - MATE 1969
Tom is the Chief Metallurgist for National Oilwell Varco in Fullerton, CA. He is responsible for relationships with supplier foundries, forge companies, and other raw material suppliers. In addition, Tom does failure analysis; material development and selection; field service related issues re repairs, testing, etc.

Tom Bauman - MATE 1974
Tom is Dean of Applied Technology at San Bernadino Valley College (http://www.valleycollege.edu/), in Alta Loma, CA. He oversees a division of 6 departments, 14 programs serving over 2200 students in a 60,000 square foot facility with over 50 faculty and support staff.

Chuck Raggio - MATE 1974
Chuck Raggio works at Stryker Orthopedics in Linden, CA. Raggio sells and supports sales of revision implants for hip and knee replacements. He provides feed-back to and from orthopedic surgeons and the product teams.

Frank Reyes - MATE 1976
Frank works as a Division Metallurgist / M&P for Arrowhead Products. He supervises the Materials and Process laboratory for Arrowhead, which manufactures metals bellows and cryogenic or high temperature/pressure ducting for military, commercial and space applications.

Ed Martinez - MATE 1979
Ed is a Quality Assurance Manager for Ducommun AeroSpace, Inc.

Jim Pyle - MATE 1980
Jim is a Senior Staff Materials Engineer at BAE Systems US Combat Systems in Saratoga, CA, where he works on materials engineering functions for the design, fabrication of wheeled and tracked military vehicles, design of new vehicles, failure analysis, and remanufacturing of old (legacy) vehicles.

Cindy Shurtleff - MATE 1980
Cindy is currently retired in Seattle, WA, after working at Korry Electronics in Seattle and Raychem Corp in Menlo Park, CA.

Neil Schweitzer - MATE 1981
Neil is a US Platform Intergration Coordinator for Strategic Systems Program in Arlington, Virginia. He is currently working on the design of the next generation Ballistic Missile submarine.

Joel Beck - MATE 1982

John is President and CEO of an advanced metallic glass and materials development company, Scoperta, Inc., in San Diego, CA.

Ron Whitten - MATE 1984
Ron is a Senior Engineer M&PE for Boeing in Long Beach, CA, where he does materials analsyis, process analysis, failure analysis and process and quality improvements.

Michael Brownell - MATE 1984
Michael is a Package & Interconnect Engineer for Intel in Los Gatos, CA. He develops requirements and solutions for new CPU sockets and high speed interconnects in server computers.

Tim Romano - MATE 1985
Tim is the manager of operations for a high rate production program at Raytheon Vision Systems in Goleta, CA - Uncooled Infrared Imaging Systems.

Thomas Austin - MATE 1985
Thomas is working for ConocoPhillips Alaska as a corrosion engineer. His primary role is to do boiler and pressure vessel inspection, repair, and alteration and be a technical authority for CPAI for vessels and tanks. He also does failure analysis, inspection and corrosion control issues for the Alpine, Kuparuk, and Cook Inlet fields as a secondary job function.

Peter Jones - MATE 1985
Peter is the Director of Metallurgical R&D at Phifer Inc. in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where he does anything and everything that reduces cost and generates revenue, for products both new and old.

David Taggart - MATE 1985
As Director of Systems Integration, Dave built and lead a team of engineers in designing large scale integrated photovoltaic power systems for least cost installation and operation

Bill LaFontaine - MATE 1985
Bill is a Vice President of Corporate Strategy for IBM (http://www.ibm.com) in Carmel, NY. He is currently working with IBM General Managers on their business strategies and growth initiatives. Particular focus on Global Services and Engineering & Technology Services businesses. Formally VP of WW Technology Group Sales, IBM Systems & Technology Group.

Stephen Lee - MATE 1985
Stephen is a Manager for the Applications Lab at Coherent, Inc. in San Mateo, CA. Coherent manufactures a wide range of laser products for commercial, and scientific markets. The Applications lab assists in the development of manufacturing processes utilizing laser technology and studies laser-materials interactions.

Chuck Gee - MATE 1986
Chuck is an Aerospace Segment Manager for Master Chemical, where he does business development and sales for the aerospace industry.

Doug Cox - MATE 1986
Doug is a Customer Assurance Manager for Hewlett Packard, where he assures that products are developed and managed in-market that meet or exceed customer expectations, works with R&D, Marketing, Customer Service, and Sales to ensure customers have positive experience with HP printing products, specifically inkjet, and manages a staff of 15 employees and contractors across 6 sites internationally.

Gwen Nail (Stahl) - MATE 1986
Gwen lives with her MATE alum husband Carl in San Jose, CA, where she is retired, after working in failure analysis.

Lance Dohman - MATE 1989
Lance is working in environmental construction and consulting at Aquatic Environments in San Francisco, CA.

Eric Fremd - MATE 1990
Eric works in electronics for Brocade Communications, with a focus in Quality and Process.

Clayton Lantz - MATE 1992
Clayton is a Process/Product Engineer at Intel in Phoenix, Az, where he does inline and EOL performance analysis in a semiconductor process.

Curt Malam - MATE 1992
Curt is an Engineer at Chromalloy Gas Turbine LLC, in Fort Walton Beach, CA, where he provides engineering/quality support services to 38 locations globally in the gas turbine engine market.

Tim Bertini - MATE 1993
Tim is a M&P Engineer-Metallics at The Boeing Company (http://boeing.com), in Huntington Beach, CA. He is involved with anything and everything metallic. He currently splits time between Metallurgy/Welding and Std Parts/Mech Test groups.

The Huntington Beach site is part of the IDS business unit responsible for defense and aerospace. We support NASA (Space Shuttle, ISS) as well as the gov't (Delta rocket, lots of 'black' programs) in product development, maintainence, and general problem solving.

Tons of hands on stuff like:

  • mech testing
  • weld schedule development
  • new process review/study
  • FSW R&D work
  • failure analysis

The coolest part has been a couple of trips to Cape Canaveral--got to climb all over the Space Shuttle taking measurements and such. Also visited a loaded launch pad just before Discovery mission.

Dennis Long - MATE 1993
Dennis works as a Contract engineer for oversite on the design, procure, and construction of the Missile Defense program facilities in Alaska. Facilitate associated agency and contractors to meet the scope, schedule and budget. Engineering SME emphasis is structural, mechanics and materials.

Kristian Story - MATE 1994
Kristian is a Key Account Manager - Microelectronics for Enthone, Inc. (http://www.enthone.com) in San Jose, CA. Kristian says "My duties include working in Marketing to develop new business for Key Microelectronics accounts, in the Americas, who have needs in wafer bumping. I also train Sales Engineers in the Americas to help keep them apprised of the latest technology in wafer scale packaging."

Mike Ellis - MATE 1994
Mike works as a New Product Introduction Engineer at KLA-Tencor ( http://kla-tencor.com) in San Jose, CA. He works with the Development Engineers on new multi-million dollar Automated Bright Field Microscopes. These are used in the inspection of semi-conductor wafers. He works with the service groups making sure they have the proper procedures, spare parts and training available to keep the systems running.

Tim Ailanjian, P.E. - MATE 1994
Tim is a licensed Metallurgical Engineer and a state certified Permanent Amusement Ride Qualified Safety Inspector. He is responsible for performing safety inspections of the attractions at Disney's California Adventure, and for conducting audits with state inspectors. Annually, he certifies to the state (sign under penalty of perjury) that the attractions are in compliance with state regulations.

Michelle Hazard - MATE 1994
Michelle is a Module & Assembly Engineering Manager for Microsemi in Huntington Beach, CA. She develops custom semiconductor packaging and manages the new product introduction process for ICs and modules.

Matt Weal - MATE 1994
Matt is a Product Development Engineer at Toyota Racing Development.

Dan Acfalle - MATE 1995
Dan works as a Police Officer for the City of Vallejo Police Department. He does major accident reconstruction / investigation, enforces the California Vehicle Code, performs roadway engineering & traffic flow control, and educates the public driver with the rules of the road.

Chris Heyde - MATE 1995
Chris is a Quality Engineer at Watlow Electronics Mfg. Co. in St. Louis, MO. He is responsible for product line quality improvement as a member of six sigma green belt process improvement team. He participates in root cause analysis of critical product failure modes.

Tejal is a Senior MTS, Quality Engineering at Maxim Integrated Products in Lewisville, Texas, where she oversees the preparation of quality reports, leads project teams in order to resolve corrective actions, and does project management and training.

Dale Claassen - MATE 1997
Dale is a Maintenance Engineer at Southern Nevada Water Systems in Las Vegas, NV. He takes care of all the corrosion issues for Souther Nevada Water Systems on all their pipelines, tanks, and treatment facilities. He is also the proud father of triplets, 2-boys and 1-girl, which leads him to comment, "No amount of education can prepare someone for that!".

Carlos Garcia - MATE 1999
Carlos is a R&D Engineer/Scientist for Hewlett-Packard (http://www.hp.com) in Albany, OR. He works on Materials selection, package design, and reliability testing/modeling for materials systems in existing and new products.

Ben August - MATE 1999
Since 2006, Ben been performing Linux and Windows system administration for the Vice provost for Undergraduate Education at Stanford University (http://ual.stanford.edu/).

York is a Sales Engineer at Nalco Company in San Francisco.

Darrin Kent - MATE 1999
Darrin is currently an R&D Engineer for Sequent Medical in Murrieta, CA.

Steve Schueneman - MATE 1999
Steve is a Consulting Engineer for Puget Sound Energy, which involves him in anything related to corrosion control on natural gas pipelines in the greater Puget Sound area. His responsibilities include cathodic protection, coatings, interference issues, failure analysis, design review, standards, procedures, and training personnel in other departments.

James Martin - MATE 1999
James is a Research Engineer for the Naval Research Laboratory (http://www.nrl.navy.mil) in Key West, FL. James is the head of the US Navy's Marine Coatings Test Facility in Key West Florida. He is responsible for all testing and evaluations being performed at the facility including sponsors and fleet support abroad.

Geoff Rogers - MATE 1999
Geoff is the Principal Metallurgical/Welding Engineer at Spectra Energy, responsible for support of company US operations welding and NDE program.

David Roper - MATE 1999
David is a Sr. Manufacturing Engineer at Aerojet. (http://www.aerojet.com) in Sacramento, CA. His work involves support of manufacturing processes in the composite structures shop, making rocket motor cases and other advanced composite structures. Jason Blackwood - MATE 2000
Jason is a Process Engineer for Intel Corporation (http://www.intel.com) in Chandler, AZ. He is currently working as a PECVD engineer at Intel's Fab 24 300mm wafer factory near Dublin, Ireland.

Jeff Henness - MATE 2000
Jeff is a Materials Engineer for Inovati (http://www.inovati.com) in Goleta, CA. His company does work with metallic-based coatings to be applied to various metal and non-metal substrates. Among the many mechanical properties and corrosion prevention benefits the coatings are applied in a very environmentally friendly process. Our main product lines include alternatives for hard-chrome and cadmium coatings.

Brendan Kelso - MATE 2001
Brendan is a Inventioneer. (http://www.ScuffAwayPainter.com) in Shell Beach, CA. Brendan is currently surviving. Brendan is in the process of launching his own business. He has created a product and brought it to market. Until that actually takes off and allows him to work entirely on it, he is doing construction on the side, teaching Shakespeare for Kids classes, teaching Inventions for kids classes, and being a stay at home dad.

Lenora Bennett - MATE 2001
Lenora Bennett is a Manufacturing Engineer in Austin, TX. She says, "I completed two years as a manufacturing engineer with Tech-Etch, Inc. in Plymouth, MA. Tech-Etch specializes in manufacturing precision parts from thin sheet metal using photo-etch processes. I was responsible for several hundred parts which were used in applications such as communications, electronics and human implants. I was also responsible to develop and maintain control plans for a chemical etch process used to etch 'Elgiloy' and electropolish processes. Currently, I have relocated to Austin, TX with my husband and am seeking employment in a related field."

Vincent Cusimano - MATE 2001
Vincent is a Sr. Sales Engineer at Oriental Motor in San Jose, CA, where he works on increasing company sales, creating produt demos, finding solutions to complex engineering problems and recommending a product.

Matthew Lloyd - MATE 2001
Matt is a Scientist in the National Center for Photovoltaics at NREL. His research is helping to bring organic photovoltaics to the marketplace.

Garrett Cole - MATE 2001
Garrett acts as a researcher in the Meso, Micro, and Nanotechnology Center in the Electronics Engineering Technology Division at LLNL. His research focuses on optical MEMS devices for various sensor technologies.

Greg Kooistra - MATE 2002
Greg is a Design Engineer for the Product Solutions Group at Watson Furniture Group (http://www.watsonfurniture.com/) in Silverdale, WA.

Watson is a small manufacturer of European style office furniture just outside of Seattle. The company is highly focused on sustainable manufacturing practice (no VOC emission, or hazardous materials and the use recycled(downcycled) materials. We are much closer than many large firms in achieving products that will nourish. Some of my duties involve:

  • Project management
  • Stage Gate design process
  • Design engineering
  • Refining the mechanical specifications for new products
  • Establishing testing standards and pass criteria for new products
  • Design new productsfrom concept through refinement with constant evaluation against the Product Specification
  • Assist Product Designers with concept refinement including FEA, tolerance review, FAIs and Manufacturability review
  • Establish costs for new products, by which sell price will be determined
  • Complete Engineering drawing packages for new products
  • Create or verify BOMs for new products.
  • Prototype new products
  • Acquire Design Verification and Manufacturing Approval.

Masao Drexel - MATE 2002
Masao works for Confirmd, LLC as a Medical Device Test Engineer. Confirmd provides medical device testing and characterization services. Corrosion testing, FEA, fatigue, mechanical properties, custom device-specific test development, and testing of Nitinol-based devices.

Dustin Hulbert - MATE 2002
Dustin is a Graduate Student Researcher at U.C. Davis, Division of Materials Science (http://www.chms.ucdavis.edu). Dustin is researching advanced structural oxide ceramics including superplasticity and formability studies.

Alison Souza - MATE 2002
Alison is a Principal R&D Engineer for SpineWorks Medical in Santa Clara, CA.

Kate Thomson - MATE 2002
Kate is a Senior Design Engineer at Stryker Endoscopy. She is designing medical devices in San Jose, CA.

Aaron Baldwin - MATE 2002
Aaron is a graduate student at University of Delaware. As a graduate student in the Materials Science and Engineering department he is developing polymeric materials for use in biomedical applications. Polymer synthesis and functionalization techniques are used to create hydrogel matrices used as drug delivery vehicles or three dimensional scaffolds for cellular adhesion and growth. The scope of his projects span from synthesis and characterization to in vitro testing and in vivo animal studies.

Justin Creel - MATE 2002
Justin has just finished his PhD at UC Davis and is currently looking for a job.

Ben McFadden - MATE 2002
Ben works as a Project Engineer at Corrpro Co. He manages sales, schedules of testing and repairs, reports writing, and invoices all underground storage tank (UST) cathodic protection projects in northern California and northern Nevada. Coordinates and oversees western United States region operations for cathodic protection work of gas station USTs for national client. In addition, performs designs, installations, repairs, and tests of UST cathodic protection systems. Manages and performs cathodic protection testing of various structures, including municipal pipelines. Lead engineer for creation of anode manufacturing production line at local facility.

Don Frederickson - MATE 2003
Don is a Project Manager at Star Trac, in Corona, CA. As the manufacturing subject matter expert on the Oracle implementation team, he manages process improvement projects in areas of order management, materials, quality, new product introduction, and manufacturing process transfer.

Katie Follett (maiden name Day) - MATE 2003
Katie is a Graduate Student/ Research Assistant at Case Western Reserve University (http://www.cwru.edu) in Cleveland Heights, OH. Her work involves using X-ray diffraction to help our understanding of carburization of stainless steels.

Cheuk Tang - MATE 2003

Justin works as a Product Metallurgist for Wyman-Gordon in Worcester, MA.

Ronnie Pierce - MATE 2003
Ronnie is the Department Manager of Tin Quality Services at USS Posco Ind. in Walnut Creek. He is responsible for the quality on 4 production lines, a testing lab, an inspection unit, and a warehouse. Manage quality engineers, metallurgical analysts, lab testers, and warehouse employees, and interacts with customers on a regular basis to help troubleshoot problems and report on quality issues.

Andrew Greefield - MATE 2003
Andrew acts as a Failure Metallurgist, working on the analysis of metallurigical failures. He also handles the operation of Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) & EDS, optical microsocpy, and develops comprehensive reports regarding failures. His work applies to a wide variety of fields and failure modes; fields include aerospace, fasteners, oil/gas, and more.

Riley King - MATE 2004
Riley is a Sr. R&D Test Engineer for TriVascular, doing design and document equipment, methods, and control systems used in durability testing of stent-grafts for treatment of abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurisms (AAA/TAA), and performing root-cause failure invesigations and work with design teams to improve products and processing.

Amanda Runciman - MATE 2004
Amanda is currently a graduate student in the Materials Science and Engineering department at the University of California, Berkeley. She is working in Professor Rob Ritchie's group on mechanical loading/deformation and fracture of nickel titanium shape memory alloys.

Jennifer Fino - MATE 2004
Jennifer is a Process Engineer at Nitinol Devices and Components (http://www.nitinol.com) in Castro Valley, CA.

Ryan Faries - MATE 2004
Ryan is a Multi-Disciplined Engineer at Raytheon: Space and Airborne Systems in Los Angeles, CA. Alejandra Hernadez - MATE 2008
Alejandra currently works for the Naval Facilities Engineering Service Center (https://portal.navfac.navy.mil/portal/page/portal/navfac/navfac_ww_pp/navfac_nfesc_pp) in Oxnard, CA. She is currently training for the NACE CP1 certification, while aiding engineers in the Waterfront Materials division with their projects and reports. She has helped conduct cathodic protection surveys in various locations, including Guam and San Nicolas Island.
