Materials Outreach
Materials Engineering students act as outreach ambassadors by showing the general public (especially younger kids) what materials engineering is all about. The department has an active crew of MatE students that regularly visits K-12 schools and runs outreach events on campus, such as:
Interactive demonstrations of exciting materials include
- NiTi shape memory and superelastic alloys
- heat-resistant space shuttle tiles
- superabsorbent polymers
- levitating superconductors
- ferrofluids
- liquid metal
- liquid nitrogen ice cream!
