Materials Outreach

MatE students inspire younger students and the general public with the excitement of materials

Materials Engineering students act as outreach ambassadors by showing the general public (especially younger kids) what materials engineering is all about. The department has an active crew of MatE students that regularly visits K-12 schools and runs outreach events on campus, such as:

Los Osos Engineering Day

Interactive demonstrations of exciting materials include

  • NiTi shape memory and superelastic alloys
  • heat-resistant space shuttle tiles
  • superabsorbent polymers
  • levitating superconductors
  • ferrofluids
  • liquid metal
  • liquid nitrogen ice cream!

If you are interested in having a group of students visit us or having Cal Poly MatE students give a presentation, please contact Kathy Chen, kcchen@calpoly.edu, 805-756-6634
